IntroductionThis Guided Cycling Holiday in Italy called Lombardy Castles Gravel Tour is a 360 km (224 miles) bicycle trip that takes place within the Lombardy region with the sole exception of the city of Piacenza, located on the southern bank of the Po river in Emilia Romagna. It is developed with a ring configuration and allows you to ride through historic cities, fortified villages and areas of high natural value. Thanks to the almost total absence of altitude difference, it can be pedaled without particular difficulties. 1st stage: Bergamo – Romano di Lombardia(65 km: paved 60%; gravel 40%)(40 miles) The bike adventure begins in Bergamo, a city served by a transport network including the Orio al Serio international airport. We leave the city to cycle south along the park of the Serio river, passing through towns, castles and fortified villages of absolute value such as Malpaga and Cologno al Serio. Once we cross the historical places of the Fosso Bergamasco, we head towards Romano di Lombardia, the arrival point of this first stage. 2nd stage: Romano di Lombardia – Soncino(50 km: paved 45%; gravel 55%)(31 miles) Once we leave Romano di Lombardia with its Rocca Viscontea, we enter more and more into the heart of the fortified realities. From Cividate al Piano we deviate to skirt the Oglio river inside its namesake park. We continue along its course between placid bends and pleasant cycle paths until we reach the breathtaking medieval village of Soncino. 3rd stage: Soncino – Cremona(60 km: paved 65%; gravel 35%)(37 miles) From Soncino we continue on the Città Murate cycle path along the Oglio river until we enter the province of Cremona. Skirting the western bank of the river, we come to Genivolta and the Tombe Morte, a place from which various canals made to facilitate the irrigation of the fields branch off. Following one of these waterways between relaxing environments and away from traffic, we reach Cremona, the city of Torrazzo and the master luthiers. 4th stage: Cremona – Piacenza(60 km: paved 40%; gravel 60%)(37 miles) From Cremona we continue for several kilometers along the northern bank of the Po river to the small town of Maccastorna, whose symbol is represented by the imposing Castle of Belpavone. Once refreshed, we continue through main and secondary waterways in an area rich in biodiversity, in view of the now imminent arrival in Piacenza, seat of Palazzo Farnese, reachable only by crossing the Po river. 5th stage: Piacenza – Lodi(55 km: paved 70%; gravel 30%)(34 miles) Once we cross the watercourse that demarcates the regional borders between Emilia Romagna and Lombardy, we skirt its banks along cycle paths until we cross amusing dirt roads that lead us into the Brembiolo park, a pretty natural area that anticipates the entrance to the valuable historic center of Lodi. 6th stage: Lodi – Bergamo(70 km: paved 40%; gravel 60%)(43 miles) From Lodi we soon immerse ourselves in the Adda River Park, among amusing dirt roads and paths that run along the eastern bank of this emissary river of Lake Como. Having reached Trezzo sull'Adda, we cross the provincial borders entering the territory of the Serenissima. After visiting the former industrial village and UNESCO site of Crespi d'Adda, we continue along the Brembo river until we cross the finish line of this Cycling Holiday through the Lombard Castles in Bergamo, whose distinctive symbol is represented by the Venetian walls that surround the Città alta, the high City.

The itinerary develops in the Po Valley within the provinces of Bergamo, Brescia, Cremona, Piacenza, Lodi and Milan. The route, very varied from a naturalistic and architectural point of view, touches river parks, protected areas and waterways crossed by cycle paths and technically very easy dirt paths in the shade of local vegetation. In the historic centers of the cities, on the other hand, secondary roads and asphalted cycle paths allow you to pedal safely avoiding the dangers of traffic. Overall a tour with no gradients and with a good percentage of gravel, equal to 45%.
